The key purpose of the Tasmanian White Paper is to answer the following question:
How can Tasmania best position itself to capture current and emerging economic opportunities in Asia?
To help develop the White Paper the Tasmanian Government entered into a collaborative partnership with the Australian National University Crawford School of Public Policyled by the Crawford School's Professor Peter Drysdale AM. In his work on the Tasmanian White Paper, Professor Drysdale was able to draw on the knowledge and expertise he gained from being on the high-level Advisory Panel providing guidance on the Australian Government's Asian Century White Paper.
The Australian Government commenced development of the Australia in the Asian Century White Paper in September 2011 and released its final White Paper in October 2012. The Australian White Paper complements and provides part of the evidence base for the Tasmania's Place in the Asian Century White Paper.
The Australian White Paper identifies several key themes that are significant to the Tasmanian White Paper:
An issues paper was developed to provide an overview of the some of the issues facing Tasmania in the Asian Century and to inform and invite submissions in to the development of the Tasmanian White Paper.

The Tasmanian White Paper was launched on 27 March 2013.
